Harley on the Bookcase

  1. Anonymous7:42 AM

Harley seems to have just the expression my cat assumes when I've been gone so much as overnight: "How dare you leave me alone without a steady diet of your love and adoration?"

I'm sure that means he's glad you're back!

  2. Hi, Anon. Thanks for your comment.

I certainly think he's glad I'm back, since when I got home on Saturday night, he demanded major scritchies and cuddling. He only started acting aloof after that, as if aware that he'd besmirched his feline honor.

That sounds about right. After an absence, my boy likes to shower me with love, spread his scent all over me (and all over anything another animal might have marked), reminding me and any other being that might have the sense (and scent) to notice that I already have an owner (with fur!). It's only after he's thoroughly overwhelmed any other claims that he moves on to dealing with me.

It can take days for him to finally forgive and forget -- but he has always done so (so far) nonetheless.

I sometimes wonder if I am as good at forgiving as he is -- when he gives up his anger over the affront to his honor, his love is so pure and true it puts me (and my own petty tempers) to shame.

It's amazing what our pets can teach us about the boundaries and responsibilities of love.
